A robot for moving furniture

In the Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lab of the University of Cincinnati, student researchers developed artificial intelligence to train robots to work together to move a couch — or in this case, a long rod that served as a stand-in — around two obstacles and through a narrow door in computer simulations.

Parallax receives $9.6M in federal funding

Parallax Advanced Research received $9.6 million in federal funding to connect academic and industry innovators in West Virginia and Appalachia with the Department of the Air Force. The money will go toward developing the next generation of science and technology to advance national defense. (In tomorrow's newsletter, we speak to Parallax CEO Dennis Andersh and Director Matt Bush.)

STEM award goes to Miami

Miami University’s Bridges Program has received a 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The awards honor colleges and universities that encourage students from underrepresented groups to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

Inc.'s 5000, Cincy edition

Inc. Magazine’s 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America list represents a unique look at the most successful and independent small companies within the American economy. This year’s list recognized some Cincinnati standouts: technology engineering firm STEP CG; management consulting company TiER1 Performance; hospital and health care company Health Carousel; and management consulting company SynFiny Advisors.

New fund for minority owned businesses

A coalition of local business groups is trying to increase the number of businesses owned by minorities by launching a new fund. The Business Legacy Fund will make business ownership more accessible for all.

Ms.Medicine expands

Health care/femtech startup Ms.Medicine will be expanding into St. Louis this fall. The news comes roughly 18 months after Ms.Medicine announced a multimillion-dollar Series A in early 2020.
