Physna closes another funding round

Just five months after raising $20 million, Physna has raised $56 million in a Series B funding round. The company plans to use the capital to grow Physna Enterprise, its deep-learning platform and Thangs, its free geometric search engine that allows users to search, store, share and collaborate on 2.5 million 3D models. You can check out our interview with Physna CEO Paul Powers from earlier this year.

UC nominated for innovation talent award

The University of Cincinnati is one of six university finalists for the ninth annual Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Awards. The six finalists, which also include Ohio University, will compete for four different awards that recognize exemplary and innovative case studies of economic engagement impact. UC is nominated for the IEP Talent Award, which recognizes initiatives in education and workforce development.

Does smart tech makes us dumber?

UC is in the news again for a new study about smart technology and its effect on our cognitive abilities. Research led by social/behavioral expert Anthony Chemero indicates that dependence on smart tech doesn’t “dumb us down.” The study claims smartphones and digital technology change the ways in which we engage our biological cognitive abilities, and that these changes are cognitively beneficial.

Helmet cams for MLB

ActionStreamer, in partnership with T-Mobile, is creating point-of-view cameras for MLB’s Home Run Derby in Denver. The cameras will give viewers the opportunity to witness both the batting practice and the derby itself through cameras on batters’ and pitchers’ helmets.

Miami U to build innovation hub

Miami University will receive a $1.5 million grant to transform a vacant building into a hub for advancing ideas, inventions and innovations with economic value in the marketplace. The 39,000-square-foot facility will house office space; an entrepreneurship center; startups; a workforce and small business development resource center; a design and testing area; and space for manufacturing operations.

Innovative defense tech

Recently launched startup Velontra is working to create innovative defense technology at a fraction of the time and cost their competitors can. The team was able to develop and create a fully functional ramjet engine in just 22 days.
